Adult Altar Servers

Join the liturgical team and become an adult altar server. Serve on the Altar of our Lord during funeral Mass, special events, and occasional weekends.

Adult Bible Study Group

Join others in studying sacred Scripture and dive into the mysteries of the Bible. The group meets every Tuesday from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Parish office.

Adult Choir

Sing as part of ensemble for Mass and special events. Rehearsals are held Wednesdays in the choir loft following 7:00 p.m. Mass.

Archives Committee

Our parish is rich in history. Help maintain a historical record of parish events and happenings. This group is currently looking for a chairperson to establish meeting schedules.

Auction to Benefit Sacred Heart School (formerly called “More Than an Auction”)

Help the Sacred Heart of Jesus School with this very important fundraiser. Many and various opportunities are available. This fundraiser is held the last Sunday in April.

Buildings and Grounds Committee

This group oversees all aspects of parish buildings and grounds, including clean-up, maintenance, and repairs. They meet once a month at the rectory in the evenings. If interested in helping, contact Paul Meyer (717-899-6454).

Cafeteria/Kitchen Helpers (School)

Help prepare and serve lunch for the children. Assist in cleaning up afterwards. 


Lead the assembly in song during weekend Masses (4:00 p.m. Saturday; 7:30 and 11:00 a.m Sunday). Training is available.

Catechist Tutors

One–on-one catechism instruction with a teenager or adult over several months.  Prepare students for reception of the sacraments or entry into the Catholic Church.  Meetings are based on student/tutor schedules.

CCD (Catechism Classes for Children)

If your child is a member of our parish and not enrolled at Sacred Heart School, please register him or her up for weekly religious instruction held on Sundays during the school year. Classes meet between Masses, from 9:00 to 10:50 a.m., beginning in early September and concluding shortly after Easter. Contact Connie Quinn (717-667-6507) to register your child or to volunteer as a teacher, substitute teacher, or classroom aide.

Cemetery Maintenance

Assist with the Maintenance of our parish cemetery. This committee meets Wednesday afternoons at 3:00 p.m., beginning in spring and ending at the end of October. Contact David Stoicheff (717-248-9567).

Citizens Concerned for Human Life

This group seeks to promote respect for and protection of human life, from natural conception until natural death. A chairperson is needed to establish regular meeting times.

Cleaning and Painting Team

Be on call for special spruce-up projects, such as mopping, dusting, and/or painting in church, rectory, or school. This group will work in conjunction with maintenance staff and other committees (such as Sacristans and Buildings & Grounds)

Coffee and Donuts

Enjoy the weekly coffee and donut social held after the 7:30 and 11:00 a.m. Sunday Masses; begins in September and ends after Easter (no summer months). We welcome volunteers to pick up donuts and help set up.  Please join our team, alone or with a friend, and have fun talking with your fellow parishioners each week. Collection Counters

Assist with counting the weekly Sunday collection for the parish. This group meets every Monday at 9:00 a.m.

Development Committee (School)

Help to plan and implement strategies for promotion and support of the parish school.

Finance Council

The Finance Council advises the pastor on matters concerning parish finances, in order to help maintain a healthy, vibrant parish. The group meets monthly to review and make recommendations on parish finances. Contact Fr. Bill if you are interested in this committee. (717-242-2781).

Funeral Choir

Sing as part of ensemble for Funeral Masses. No regular meeting times; however, it is suggested that members also be part of the Adult Choir, if possible.

Funeral Lunch Hospitality Group

Help at funeral luncheons to set up, cook, serve, and clean up for funeral luncheons. Contact Kay Parker via the parish office for more information.


Welcome people as they arrive at Mass and distribute bulletins as they leave.

Junior Youth Group

A group for students in grades 6-8.  Meets once a month, for study, service, and fun. Call Adrienne Zannino (717-247-3963).

K-5 Children's Group

Students in grades K-5  meet monthly to learn more about the faith while having fun. Contact Adrienne Zannino (717) 247-3963.

Knights of Columbus

The Knights are a group of men who, through social and intellectual fellowship among members and their families, promote educational, charitable, religious, social welfare, war relief, and public relief works. Our Sacred Heart Knights meet once a month on Tuesday evenings and hold various activities for the parish and community. The Knights of Columbus is open to men 18 years old or older. Knights of the Holy Temple

Supervise high-school boys to help them to become Catholic young gentlemen through service to the parish at the liturgy and in charity. The group meets twice a month. Orientation and an admission process are required. For information contact Fr. Bill.

Landscaping and Grounds Committee (School)

Clean up leaves in the fall; shovel snow on the playground; do weeding.


Read from the Lectionary during Mass.

Library Aides

Repair shelves; access books; help with lessons; check out books.

Liturgical Ministries

This group consists of Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, lectors, cantors, altar servers (adults and children), greeters, and ushers. Serving the Lord on the Altar is one of the most precious gifts you can give.  Contact Annemarie Swineford at the parish office (717-242-2781).

Liturgy Committee

Develops and executes plans to meet liturgical needs of the parish, especially for Advent/Christmas and Lent/Easter. This group meets once a month in the parish office, beginning in September and ending just before summer. Marriage Mentor Couples

Help prepare engaged couples to enter the Sacrament of Marriage. Diocesan training provided. Contact Sandy & Steve Dedmon for more information (717-543-2061).

Middle States Committee (School)

Prepare for upcoming midpoint visit of the Middle States Accreditation Board.

NFP (Natural Family Planning)

Natural Family Planning is the only means of regulating birth that is approved by the Catholic Church. Classes are offered frequently and free of charge to all who want to learn more about this spiritual and effective means of planning for a family. For information, call Martin or Mary Smith (717-935-5256).

Parish Newsletter Assistants

Help with parish newsletter, writing articles, photocopying, and doing mailings. This group meets three times a year.

Parish Photo Directory Committee

Help coordinate photographers for the families and for the individual ministries; design and compile data for the directory. This group needs a chairperson to establish meeting times. The directory is done every five years and in spring 2015will begin work on a new one.

Playground Monitors (School)

Assist children in playground activities.

Prayer Chain

Pray for prayer requests made known to the parish. There is an e-mail chain and a phone chain, you may be on both or just one. Contact Annemarie at the Parish office (717-242-2781).

Publicity Committee

Provide information to news Media on Events. Contact Ashley Henry at the parish office.


Assist those learning to become Catholic by being a godparent (sponsor), providing snacks during classes (hospitality), or teaching assigned topics (instructor resources provided). This group meets every Thursday at 7:00 p.m. in the parish office, beginning in September and ending in May.

Red Hat Society “Sassy Crimson Ladies”

Join other ladies for a monthly outing and fellowship.

Sacred Heart Adorers

Sacred Heart of Jesus School Board of Education  

A consultative body to the pastor and principal to help inform and guide their decisions on policy matters affecting the parish school. The Board meets the second Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the school. For more information, call the Board of Education President, Paul Murphy (717-436-2656), or e-mail Dr. Joseph Maginnis, our school principal.

Sacred Heart Thrift Shop

Our parish thrift shop is at 4 North Dorcas St. in downtown Lewistown. It is open Monday through Friday 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. For more information, call 717-247-2797.


Have you ever wondered how our church stays so beautiful? Assist our sacristans with washing altar linens, cleaning the marble, putting up and taking down banners and linens during special times of the Liturgical Year, and many other behind-the-scenes tasks. Sacristans meet as needed throughout the year, mostly during the day.

St. Vincent de Paul Society

Assist with outreach to the poor and needy. Training is available. Members meet once a month to plan meals for the needy, which are provided every third Saturday of the month. Office hours are Tuesday 10:00-11:45 a.m. and Friday 1:00-3:00 p.m. in the parish office. For more information call Nancy Sanges (717-242-2781) or e-mail Annemarie Swineford at the parish office.

Stewardship Ministers

Assist in occasional administrative tasks related to promoting parishioner involvement through “Time, Talent, and Treasure.”


Take collection at Mass and assist with seating.

Vacation Bible School

Join the Vacation Bible School group. K-5 and Junior Youth Group parents work with the Sister Servants of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, from Cresson, PA, to make a fun, faith-filled week during summer break. Contact Annemarie Swineford at the parish office (717-242-2781).

Van Transportation

Transportation to Mass and special services is available. To arrange a ride or to volunteer to drive, contact Annemarie Swineford at the parish office (717-242-2781).

Women In Service to the Sacred Heart (WIISH)

This group, formerly the Women’s Association of Sacred Heart, is social and service oriented.  They plan and participate in activities that benefit the parish and community. WIISH meets in the parish office on the second Wednesday of the month, beginning in August and ending in June. Contact Dottie Peiffer (717-248-1804).

Youth Group

A group for students in grades 9-12 who meet regularly on alternating Sunday evenings for study, service, fun and friendship based on a Catholic/Christian foundation. Call the parish office (717-242-2781) for more information, or email Fr. Bill.

Youth Ministries

This group is new to our parish this year. The core group represents K-5, Jr. Youth, and our High School Youth ministries. They are working together to ensure that our parish youth experience an encounter with Christ through education, social activities, and service. They meet 4 times a year to establish and plan activities. The individual groups set up their own schedules of activities and will need volunteers.
